Threading in a lathe

Done by a first term student.  Note this is a 5/8 X 8  ACME thread.  Thread was cut between centers using a tool the student ground himself using the grinding fixture shown as another project.  Although the rod was short, several "dry" passes had to be made to get a full depth of thread over the entire length so the commercial nut would freely spin over the entire thread.  This "motivated" the construction of the traveling rest shown as another project.  ACME threads are common in this area on large oil field valves, and are frequently required in repair work.
