In craft machining, adaptation, part design/reverse engineering, and precision layout are as important as the actual machining. 

First term student Paul Hammack is measuring the compound slide "T-nut" slot prior to machining a custom t-nut to mount the KRF style tool post.  Paul is a Machine Technology student and is rebuilding a Craftsman/Atlas bench lathe for his home shop.
